This Short Week in Room 8 (10/11- 10/13)

ELA:
This week we will continue reading about Families. We will make connections with the text and learn more about one another. We will begin our "Hello Baby" writing project where we see how we are connected to our family members (physical traits, character traits, and interests).

Skills that we will be working on this week include the following:

  • vowel review
  • adding -ing to word endings with no spelling change (we learned that if there is one vowel and two letters after the vowel, we just add -ing to the end)
  • proper nouns (we remember that nouns are "specific" people, places, and things)
  • special titles (Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Dr.)
  • recalling key details in text
  • Word Wall:
    take   every   old   by   after
Science:
We will continue to learn about plant parts as we begin to discover how seeds change.
Math:
Skills that we will be working on this week include the following:
  • building our knowledge of numbers to 120 and beyond
  • skip counting by 10s to 200, 5s to 120, and 2s to 30 and beyond
  • continued practice on counting on for addition and counting back for subtraction
  • explaining our thinking as we solve word problems
  • commutative property with addition and multiplication
  • determine missing part in equations
Coding and Robotics:
We will learn how to do "unplugged" coding. We are recalling, in order, the characters a mouse meets in a story. We will work with a partner to create an algorithm so he/she can move the mouse through the different character cards on the floor in the correct order.

We will learn about loop patterns in coding.

Rooted Mind:
This week we will review the following roots-

  • uni- means 1
  • tri- means 3
  • vaca/vac- means empty
  • form- means to shape

Leader in Me:
This week we will review Habits 1-4 and learn about Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood.
