This Week in Room 8 (1/16 to 1/19)

ELA:
This week we will be working on the following skills:

• Identifying the correct pronoun to use in a given sentence
• Finding the evidence (answer) by going back in the text
• Restating the question in the answer
• Completing our writing for our non-fiction animal book- WOOHOO!
• Using context clues to determine meaning of an unknown word

I was ahead of the game last week with our Greek/Latin roots. We are going to continue to look at            -fect, fact-, and -fy (to make, build, cause )this week.

Your child has a link on his/her iPad called Read Theory. Read Theory is a great way for your child to practice reading a passage and answering specific questions for the passage. We will begin to utilize Read Theory at least twice a week at school. When we read, we work on going back in the text when we are answering the questions. Our goal for reading comprehension is at least 75%. I also like this resource because it is adaptive based on how well/poor your child does on the quiz. If you are working on this at home with your child, encourage him/her to read out loud to you (every few quizzes) and to go back in the text to find the answer. If your child gets stuck, you can suggest going back and "try rereading the second paragraph" to help your child pinpoint where the answer may be in the text. Please let me know if you have questions. 

Your child can also utilize Reading A-Z for reading and comprehension. I know in the past that students enjoyed recording and listening to themselves read. Please encourage this at home.

Science:

We are continuing our unit on Light. 

MATH:

This week we will continue to reinforce the following skills:

• Comparing numbers to 120 and beyond (up to 1 million!) using <, =, and >
• Determining the value and the digit for a given number in place value (For Example, 465 What is the value of the underlined number? 60 What digit is in the hundred's place? 4)
• Reading and writing number words (five hundreds, three tens, four thousands, and seven ones = 4,537)
• Determining the value of the missing number in an equation (__ - 6 = 14 or 7 = 12 - __)

Khan Academy Mappers!!!!

This is an amazing resource based on your child's Winter Math MAP results. Khan Academy Mappers is a link that provides a specific plan for your child to practice based on the RIT scores for each component in the math assessment (Counting and Cardinality, Numbers in Base Ten, Geometry, and Operations in Algebraic Thinking). This will be a resource that we will use at school twice a week during math rotations. Please feel free to have your child work on this math website at home!

This Week in Pictures!

We have been busy sharing our Flat Stanley and Flat Stella projects.

It is exciting to hear about our winter breaks.

We are working on speaking clearly and loud in front of a group.

We worked on a reading challenge this week for fireflies.

We had to go back in the text to find the evidence for our answer.

This is a big skill that we will be working on for the rest of the school year.

Where did you read THAT in the text? Go back and find the evidence. 

Order forms went home for our class book we are publishing.

All order forms need to be turned in by January 31st.

We have been working hard to tackle our "just right fits" for math.

Khan Academy Mappers is aligned with where your child is at for the latest winter MAP testing. You can see what skills your child needs to work on to move up to the next level. If you are looking for a way to challenge your child, Khan Academy Mappers does a fine job.

We are also using Tenmarks to work on specific 1st grade standards. Depending on how well your child does on the assignment, he/she may be working on challenge work on this app as well.

3rd Graders came in to work on a project with our class for their upcoming assembly.

How can we use our talents to help others?

We have been so busy reading!

It is no surprise that we are up to 900 books on Epic.

Can the Cacioppo Crew make it to 1,000 books by 2/27?

We are well on  our way!

We learned this week that we are interdependent. 

We count on each other to do our part to help make our class stronger.

In science, we had our first light experiment.

Is the material transparent, translucent, or opaque.

We had to discuss our predictions, run the test, and record our observations. 

Our leader read a book to the class "Who's On First."

This went along great with our conversations this week on Habit 5- Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

We began our illustrations for our non-fiction book.

We acted out a reader's theatre that reminds us how important it is to not prejudge someone.

Leaders need to get more information before making decisions about others.

Fireman Mike came to visit today and to teach us about fire safety.

He gave our class a special homework assignment that is due on Tuesday.

Please make sure to have your child memorize his/her address before he returns next Friday!

We learned to stay low and go!

We had a guest reader come and visit today. 

Our class loves hearing stories from visitors!

ELA:
This week we take a deeper look at finding specific examples in the text that support our answer. We will be reading and answering questions by going back and highlighting the answer in the specific color for the given question.

Other skills that we will work on this week include the following:

• Introduction to idioms
• Using context clues to determine meaning of unknown word in a given text
• Dropping the final e before adding -ed or -ing
• Going back in our writing and adding adjectives to create more detailed sentences
• Verb agreement with is/are/was/were

• Continued practice on place value (hundreds, tens, ones and beyond)
• Understanding the difference between finding the digit and the value of the underlined digit in numbers to 120 and beyond
• Using our place value knowledge to read and write the number given in a specific word sentence. Example- four tens, seven ones, and eight hundreds = 841
• Strategies for solving word problems and showing evidence for how we solved the problems

SCIENCE:
We will continue learning more about light and shadows.

Words Their Way:
Your child will be introduced to a new sort this week based on his/her developmental spelling. Please keep an eye out for your child's sort so the spelling pattern can be reinforced at home.

Rooted Mind:
-fy, fact-, -fect means to make, do, build, or cause

We have read 800 books since the start of the school year on Epic.

Our goal is to reach 1,000 books by February 27th.

We are learning about proactive language and how to be a transition person.

How can we turn something negative into something positive?

We have the choice in every circumstance.

We learned how to be proactive and improve ourselves. 

When we try to get better we will inspire others to want to get better at something.

This goes along with being positive. If I am positive, I will inspire others to think positive.

We have been busy working on our new word sorts.

Mrs. Buch taught us about the new expectations for the MPR during lunch time.

Now that we know the plan, we are ready to lead the way!

We are working on our reading comprehension skills on Kids A-Z.

One challenge that we are working on is to go back in the text to find the evidence.

Where did it say that? I will go back and find the answer!

What do you like to do on a snowy day?

We would show you, but it is too cold outside!

We are writing down what we like to do in our booklet.

Flat Stellas and Flat Stanleys are returning to Kipling.

We are sharing our adventures with the class.

As we share, we are working on our presenting skills:

making sure our audience can hear us, understand us, and that we are able to answer questions from our audience! 

We have been so busy researching for our upcoming class book. 

I will be sending home important information this week about this official book that we will have published by SchoolMate Publishing!

We learned about an onomatopoeia.

Our challenge was to research to find an onomatopoeia for our animal.

We celebrated when we reached our goals in math on Khan Academy Mappers and Tenmarks!

Khan Academy Mappers is a great app for "just right fit" activities in math. Tenmarks starts by having the student work on the first or second grade skill and adjusts to challenge or remedial based on the student's performance.

Keep up the good work and keep on practicing!

We discussed how Habits 1, 2, 3, and 7 are "Me" Habits and 4, 5, and 6 are "We" Habits.

We learned about the abundance mentality.

We want to be happy and we want others to be happy too.

It is important to think of others so everyone feels good.

We had an incredible opportunity to visit the LMC twice on Friday!

In the morning, we went down to learn how to use the library resources to find information about specific topics.

We typed in our animal to find the call number. We then used the call number in the library to find our book on our topic.

We are experts at Pebble Go, but we also learned how to use World Book Online for our research.
