This Week in Pictures! 2/5 to 2/9

We were busy making our instruments for our Cacioppo Crew Band!

We are making "flutes" with straws.

We used sand in boxes to make "maracas."

We used the rulers to make an unusual sound!

By far, the noisiest station was where students placed marbles inside a plastic cylinder.

We also made "guitars" with rubberbands and boxes.

Leader in Me focused on how Leaders are more creative when others are involved.

We took our own ideas and synergized with others to make an even better idea!

ST Math in action!

We are looking at math through a different lens.

A good challenge is to encourage your child to practice ST Math for 10-15 minutes 

at home throughout the week! 

The goal is for every student to reach 100% of the program by the end of the school year. 

We are learning about attributes of different shapes.

We know that a defining attribute is the name of the shape, number of sides, and number of corners.

A non-defining attribute is the size, color, and thickness of the shape.

In our game, we were challenged to pick a shape that was a change of one attribute from the previous shape.

We are also working to identify the name of the shape and defining attributes for the following shapes:

circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, rhombus, trapezoid, and parallelogram.

We are also learning how to classify four sided shapes as quadrilaterals.

We are also learning about different kinds of triangles:

equilateral, isosceles, right, and scalene

Different kinds of angles for triangles:

acute, right,  and obtuse

With all of the indoor recesses, students were busy at work completing this 300 piece puzzle.

I have a big heart because...

Students worked on completing the sentence and giving examples on the actions that they do to show they have a big heart.

The 2nd Graders presented during the Leadership Assembly on Wednesday.

We learned about why it is important to be grateful!

Congratulations, friends, for winning the leadership badges for February!

Our leader of the week read a story from home to the class!

We also heard about her adventures with Purple Hoser (our class Beanie Boo).

I love the intensity during this place value game. 

We are becoming experts at identifying numbers in the hundreds, tens, and ones place.

We also used geometric builders to create different 2-D and 3-D shapes!

This Week in Room 8 (2/5 to 2/9)

Valentine's Day is February 14th!

On Wednesday, February 14th, we will celebrate Valentine's Day here at Kipling. We will be making valentine bags in school for students to hold all their valentines. Please make sure that if your child is going to participate in exchanging valentines, he/she makes one for each student in the class. With the food and allergy policy for the district, there can be NO food or candy sent in with the valentines.

Recess Information:

Please remember that we go outside when the temperature/windchill is 15 degrees or above. Students need to have boots and snow pants in order to play in the snow. Please make sure that your child has a pair of shoes to change into. It is also a very good idea to send in an extra set of clothes in case your child's clothes get wet at recess.

ELA:

This week we will be working on the following skills:

Phonics -

• ow/ou sound like "hound"
• oo sound like "book"

Grammar -

• Continue use of pronouns in sentences with subject verb agreement.
• Continue to work through skills on Khan Academy 
• Nouns- identifying nouns, common/proper, singular/plural, concrete/abstract
• Verbs- identifying verbs, subject verb agreement

Sight Words - many, if, long, wish, sing

Root Word - hyper means "over, above, excessive, beyond"

Reading

This week students will be looking at different texts to:

• ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
• describe characters, setting, and major events in a story using key details.
• compare and contrast details within and among stories.
• identify leadership character traits of characters in stories.

Writing

Students will begin to work on writing reviews. Today we discovered different items that can be reviewed. They will edit their reviews to make sure that they include a variety of techniques. Students will also focus on writing beginnings that hook their readers as well as creating catchy conclusions.

MATH

Students will work on the following skills:

• Organize, represent and interpret data and ask and answer questions about the data points
• defining (closed, number of sides) and non-defining (color, relative size) attributes of shapes
• build and draw shapes with defining attributes

The students can work on differentiated geometry problems on Khan Academy Mappers Geometry and Front Row on Geometry to pinpoint specific geometry skills.

SCIENCE

We will continue with how sound is made and how sound travels. This week we already rocked out to a concert with a wide-range of instruments made by the students. We will see how sound travels through yarn and how we can use light and sound to send messages far away.

Leader in Me

This week we will have an assembly put on by the second grade students. The 2nd graders will be focusing on gratitude with the students. We are also learning that leaders are more creative when they involve others. As we involve others, we are learning how to seek to understand before talking to the group. We are also learning how to take different ideas and transform into a 3rd alternative that is even better!

Go Noodle!

On Monday, Sherri Rinker came to Kipling to share her love for reading with students. 

We enjoyed hearing about how she was inspired to write her different books.

We had to set a new reading goal for Epic!

Our goal is now 1,500 books by 2/27.

Math Rotations:

We were busy solving a word problem with animals on the farm.

We had to calculate how many legs were on the farm.

We played a place value game "I Have... Who Has" to help reinforce counting by model form

with hundreds, tens, and ones.

We are becoming experts with adding 3 two-digit numbers together with regrouping.

In science, we revisited light as we discovered how "stained glass" allows some of the light to get through. This is called translucency. 

We are becoming experts at going back in the text to find the evidence for our answers.

This challenging text about Groundhog Day gave students the opportunity to discuss with their partners why they think that is the answer and prove it by finding the words in the text.

Our 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Jorjorian's class came to our room for a research project on our favorite authors. We enjoyed learning more about different authors when we shared out our discoveries.

We mixed up our class and read a non-fiction text on groundhogs.

Our challenge afterwards was to write down five facts from the text and creatively share our learning on Chatterpix. We hope you enjoyed the video of the groundhog talking!
