1st Grade Buddy Reading, Guest Reader, Coding, Robotics, and More!

We mixed up all of first grade for buddy reading!

Students got to learn more about other students in our school.

We are working on putting random numbers in order from least to greatest.

What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?

Friends got to explore Dash the robot!

We learned how to program the robot change color, speak, and move at different speeds!

Friends synergized with Cubelets. Many are working on the challenge of getting Cubelets to move without any help from our hands.

Mrs. Buch came to Room 8 to read some poems from Shel Silverstein.

We explored a new coding app called Lightbot!

We are learning about "just right fits" so we can continue to grow our brains.

We are playing a fun game where we have to determine what comes before and after.

This can get tricky when we pull the number 60 and have to find 59.

This Week in Room 8 (9/18 to 9/22)

ELA:
This week we continue our friendship theme in our whole group read alouds.

We will be working on the following skills:

• Comparing and contrasting books on a similar topic
• Summarizing a story with transition words (First, Next, Then, and Last)
• Short o 
• Determining punctuation at the end of a sentence (period, exclamation point, and question mark)

This week we will continue working on the following skills:

• organizing data and interpreting a graph
• understanding numbers up to 120 (what comes before and after, starting and any given number and continuing to count, and counting a set of objects and determining the numeral)

We will continue Unit 1: Plant and Animal Parts.

Leader in Me:

This week we will be working on setting up classroom goals, personal goals, and how we can track our progress to reach our goals.

We will also introduce Habit 4. We will learn how we can work together, take turns, and compromise so everyone can reach their goals.

We completed our first Global Math Twitter Task Challenge (#gmttc1).

We are learning how to explain our thinking when solving math problems.

We synergized with a buddy to determine if a group of words can be categorized

 as a sentence or not a sentence.

We learned that sentences begin with capital letters, are a complete thought, words are in the correct order, and end with punctuation.

We learned how to use a new app called Pic Collage.

This app allows us to group pictures together on one sheet for us to post in Seesaw.

Did I mention that we can change the background, add text and drawings, and add stickers?!

We have been working on building our endurance with writing many sentences. 

During our "work on writing" time during Daily 5, we have been completing stories and adding plenty of details. I can't wait to see how our writing grows this year!

We discovered a new app called Epic!

Epic generates a free collection of books for students to choose from based on student interests.

We are learning how to buddy read.

Today we explored a new app called "Nearpod."

Students worked with a buddy to learn about living and non-living things.

We also learned about man-made and natural items in the world around us.

We love Kahoot!

Today we did a check in for number sense to 120.

Can you tell what number comes BEFORE or AFTER a given number?

This is a great skill to practice at home while getting ready for bed,

preparing breakfast, or in the car!

We are preparing for our first Reader's Theatre!

In our practice, we are learning how to read with expression so it sounds like a conversation, not like a robot!

We held our second Class Meeting. 

Our Class Meetings are held on Friday after lunch.

This is a chance to share a compliment for something great that someone did for you.

We used a new app called Tenmarks for a check in on math skills we have been working on.

We are learning how to sequence random numbers from least to greatest.

We really have to think when we are not starting at zero and there are missing numbers!

This Week in Room 8 (9-11 to 9-15)

We continue our Friends theme this week as we read Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, Enemy Pie, and Owen & Mzee. As we read and listen to stories, we are working on the following skills:

• Finding Treasures (looking at the pictures in stories to help us describe the setting, characters, and events)
• Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in the text
• Identify the similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic

Grammar and Phonics-

We will work on the following skills:

• Short a and short i
• Types of sentences- declarative (statements) and interrogative (questions)
• Rhyme recognition and creating rhymes

Math:

This week we will work on the following skills-

• Continued practice on non-standard measurement
• Counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numbers and represent a number of objects with a written numeral
• Organize, represent, and  interpret data with up to three categories; ask and  answer questions about the  total number of data points, how many in each  category, and  how many more or less are in one  category than in another.
